But, history has shown that boom-and-bust industries have left Coos County without economic security once the industry falters. Coos Bay needs investments in critical resources now &#8211; including $50 million to keep the Bay Area Hospital open, the areas largest employer.\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That&#8217;s why community members and partners across the state are calling on the Oregon Legislature to invest in a thriving Coos Bay, not a container terminal.<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coos County community members have a vision for a thriving future on the South Coast with a vibrant and diverse local economy that honors the abundance of the bay and prepares communities for the impacts of climate change.\u00a0 Add your voice! The e<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\" style=\"color: #eeeae5; font-size: 16px;\">stimated volume would fill 7.5 Autzen Stadiums&#8230;Go Ducks?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #eeeae5;\">&gt; <strong>Cultural Tribal resources &amp; sacred sites. <\/strong>The proposed turning basin for container ships is located at the Hollering Place, or Ellekatitch, a key area of cultural significance for the Coos People, the original stewards of the Coos Bay Estuary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #eeeae5; font-size: 16px;\">&gt; <strong>Damage to the multi-million dollar tourism and recreation industry.\u00a0<\/strong>This is the People&#8217;s Coast. Locals and visitors across Oregon love the South Coast because of the access to fishing, clamming, crabbing, water sports and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #eeeae5; font-size: 16px;\">&gt; <strong>Air pollution and climate emissions. <\/strong>The proposed project would include importing and exporting <strong>over 2 million containers<\/strong> annually through a critical ecosystem. Expanding the fossil-fuel intensive global shipping industry would bring polluting ships into the bay, disproportionately impacting the Empire neighborhood.
