In the midst of a budget deficit, the Oregon Legislature allocated $100 million in 2025 to build the PCIP, while neglecting to fund critical programs such as the Community Resilience Hubs and other life-saving climate resilience programs. The PCIP threatens to create a risky situation in which residents are dependent on one big industry for all their economic needs. But, history has shown that boom-and-bust industries have left Coos County without economic security once the industry falters. What’s at stake?<\/span><\/h2>\n> The health of the Coos Bay Estuary. <\/strong>The PCIP proposes to dredge 18 million cubic yards of material <\/span>(includes juvenile shellfish- how selfish!)<\/span> <\/span>to widen and deepen 8 miles of the Coos Bay navigation channel. The e<\/span>stimated volume would fill 7.5 Autzen Stadiums…Go Ducks?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n> Cultural Tribal resources & sacred sites. <\/strong>The proposed turning basin for container ships is located at the Hollering Place, or Ellekatitch, a key area of cultural significance for the Coos People, the original stewards of the Coos Bay Estuary.<\/span><\/p>\n> Damage to the multi-million dollar tourism and recreation industry.\u00a0<\/strong>This is the People’s Coast. Locals and visitors across Oregon love the South Coast because of the access to fishing, clamming, crabbing, water sports and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n> Air pollution and climate emissions. <\/strong>The proposed project would include importing and exporting over 2 million containers<\/strong> annually through a critical ecosystem. Expanding the fossil-fuel intensive global shipping industry would bring polluting ships into the bay, disproportionately impacting the Empire neighborhood.
