Oregon Legislature discusses “Emergency Heat Relief” bills at Hearings on Wednesday.

The House Environment & Natural Resources and Senate Housing & Development Committees will host hearings on Wednesday, February 2 at 1:00 PM and 3:15PM to discuss bills expanding cooling access in response to the deadly heatwaves this summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

[SALEM, OR]<\/b> — <\/span>A bipartisan group of legislators, health professionals, and energy, housing, and environmental justice advocates are urging the Oregon legislature to respond to the record-breaking heatwave where at least 96 Oregonians died and countless others suffered without access to life-saving cooling devices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This <\/span>Wednesday at 1:00PM<\/span><\/a> (there will be a video livestream at this <\/span>link<\/span><\/a>), the House Environment & Natural Resources Committee will consider the <\/span>Emergency Heat Relief<\/span><\/a> bill (<\/span>HB4058<\/span><\/a>) to help protect Oregon families during extreme weather.\u00a0 A companion bill (<\/span>SB1536<\/span><\/a>) that addresses cooling access for renters will be heard at the Senate Committee on Housing & Development at 3:15PM today (livestream <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cMost people who died in last year\u2019s heat dome had no access to life-saving <\/span>cooling devices in their homes. The most vulnerable Oregonians were <\/span>seniors, people with disabilities or underlying medical conditions, and those <\/span>living in upper-level multifamily units or manufactured homes. With the <\/span>climate crisis upon us, we can reasonably anticipate more extreme heat <\/span>events in the future. This legislation is an attempt to respond to changes on <\/span>the ground\u2014and to save lives,\u201d said<\/span> Representative Pam Marsh<\/b> (D-South <\/span>Jackson County).<\/span><\/p>\n
