STOP GTN XPRESS
WHAT IS GTN XPRESS?
GTN XPress is a pipeline expansion proposal from TC Energy (the company behind the Keystone Pipelines) to increase the volume of fracked gas by 150 million cubic feet per day through the aging Gas Transmission Northwest (GTN) Pipeline.
This project would lock the Northwest into expensive fossil fuel energy for decades, impact the health and safety of nearby communities, continue fracking on Tribal lands, and exacerbate the climate crisis.
GTN XPress would be a climate disaster – and it also represents a dangerous new strategy from the fossil fuel industry. In recent years, our communities have won big victories by shutting down new fossil fuel projects. Now, companies like TC Energy are pivoting to a new tactic: pipeline expansion. Expansion projects are easier to push past regulators, and many communities don’t know that they are happening until it’s too late.
TAKE ACTION TO STOP GTN XPRESS
WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Publishing hundreds of letters in newspapers across WA, OR and CA will build momentum in opposition to GTN XPress! Use this guide to write yours today.
Letters to the editor (LTEs) are important for three reasons:
1. If a media outlet receives a lot of LTEs about a specific topic, they are more likely to cover that topic. This makes our rallies and other media events more successful.
2. Besides the obituaries, they are the most read part of the newspaper.
3. Public officials check letters to the editor to see where their constituents are on certain issues. This informs them of what stance they should take.
VOICE YOUR OPINION: WRITE A COMMENT TO FERC
Write a comment to let federal regulators at FERC know why you are concerned about GTN XPress. Tell FERC how you and others would be impacted by this fossil fuel expansion.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will issue a decision about GTN XPress as soon as February 16th, 2023. In November 2022, FERC released the Final Environmental Impact Statement, which underestimates disastrous climate impacts and harmful community health and safety concerns.
LEARN MORE: WATCH THE PEOPLE'S HEARING TO STOP GTN XPRESS!
Federal Regulators didn’t holding public events for community members to weigh in on GTN XPress–so communities came together to host our own. On February 13th, community members, elected officials (including Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley), health advocates and more gave testimony and the verdict was clear–people in the Northwest strongly oppose GTN XPress. These testimonies were shared directly with FERC.

GTN XPRESS IS A STEP BACK FOR CLIMATE ACTION
GTN XPress expansion would result in more than 3.47 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses emissions per year. This is the equivalent pollution of adding 754,000 passenger vehicles per year on the road each year until 2052.
This project is inconsistent with Washington’s and Oregon’s laws that require decreasing climate emissions by 95% and 80%, respectively, by 2050. GTN XPress would raise state emissions making these targets even harder to reach. In a collaborative motion, the Attorney Generals of Washington, Oregon, and California are calling on FERC to issue a denial. Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden have also publicly opposed GTN XPress.
Fossil fuels accelerate the impacts of climate change and are responsible for the majority of the world’s climate pollution. As climate events like extreme wildfires, droughts, and flooding plague the Pacific Northwest, our communities must transition off fossil fuels to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
GTN XPRESS WOULD HAVE HARMFUL IMPACTS ON COMMUNITIES
Studies show that residential gas use can lead to high levels of NO2 in homes, increasing risk of respiratory diseases and asthma rates in children and disproportionately impacts low-income communities.
Instead of GTN XPress, our communities need a just transition to clean affordable energy
and energy efficiency. This means community-led clean energy solutions that protect
cultural resources and tribal lands, not more fossil fuel dependence
that only benefits corporate interests.
